Nicolai-Wickiup
Watershed Walk
This
interpretive walk winds its way through almost 1-mile of Oregon
Department of Forestry property located at the Gnat Creek
Fish Hatchery. The walk takes enthusiast along the lava bottomed
Gnat Creek, into the deep canopy of Doug-fir and Red-alder,
along a wetland and back to the hatchery for the completed
loop. Trail users are greeted with signs explaining forest
ecosystems, salmon lifecycle, geology and Native America tradition.
The Nicolai-Wickiup watershed council in partnership with
the Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife and Oregon Department
of Forestry have worked closely together on the since 2001.
The
grand opening of the walk was held September 2002 with over
80 community members including State Senator Joan Dukes, State
Representative Betsy Johnson, ODFW Director Lindsey Ball and
many others.
